Inspiration

I often found myself thinking about recipe cards and magazines I had kept, telling myself I would cook them someday. Whenever I noticed a cover or came across them while cleaning, I would think, “Oh right, I wanted to make this,” but in reality, I rarely ever cooked those recipes.

I also felt frustrated by constantly switching between multiple recipe apps and websites. I realized that the main problem was that recipes were not integrated into my daily life flow. That realization led me to the idea behind NORIA: an app where recipes I want to cook can be gathered in one place and easily revisited anytime.

What it does

The concept behind NORIA is “No Overlooked Recipes Ignored Anymore.” Inspired by nori, which binds ingredients together in Japanese cuisine, NORIA aims to connect people with the recipes they care about.

NORIA is a recipe management app that brings all the recipes you’re interested in into one place and helps turn “I want to cook this” into actually cooking it. It is designed to prevent saved recipes from getting buried, offering an experience that goes beyond simply saving them.

How we built it

We started by building an MVP focused only on the experiences that truly matter. Our main priority was making the process of importing recipes into NORIA as simple and powerful as possible, including support for web page and image parsing.

At the same time, we designed the foundation with future features in mind, so that NORIA can eventually support and encourage the act of cooking itself.

Challenges we ran into

Recipes come in a wide variety of formats, which made organizing and normalizing the information a major challenge. To handle this, we tested many different cases and focused on building a flexible system that can adapt to different formats.

There are still many edge cases that are not fully supported yet, but NORIA is being developed with continuous improvement in mind.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of creating an experience that helps bring excitement back into everyday cooking. By staying true to the idea of not letting recipes end at “saved,” we were able to consistently reflect this concept throughout the product.

What we learned

We initially set out to keep the feature set as minimal as possible, but as development progressed, it became clearer which features were truly necessary.

Through this process, we learned how difficult it is to decide how much functionality is needed to support a specific experience. We also integrated AI into the product for the first time, which taught us the importance of balancing accuracy and speed without compromising the user experience.

What's next for NORIA

Next, we plan to further strengthen the experience of turning “I want to cook” into real action. This includes improving recipe parsing accuracy and expanding support for more recipe formats, as well as exploring features that lower the psychological barriers before and during cooking and enhance the sense of accomplishment after cooking.

Rather than adding everything at once, we will prioritize features based on user feedback and continue developing NORIA as a recipe management app that people can use comfortably in their daily lives to actually cook.
