Inspiration
Research shows that readmissions and falls pose significant risks, particularly for elderly patients. Effective monitoring of vital signs and timely alerts can greatly improve patient care.
20% of patients are discharged too early, increasing the risk of readmission, especially among older adults - University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
Fall rates in the first week post-discharge are 74 times higher than at 90 days - CEConnection for Allied Health
23% of hospitalizations are potentially avoidable through early detection and intervention - Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR)
What it does
Our edge-first solution leverages the MPU 6050 (fall detection), BMP280 (temperature and pressure), HW-103 (moisture) sensors along with Wi-Fi 6 connectivity to monitor patients’ vital signs in real time at home.
Fall detection: IMU sensors trigger automatic alerts to 911 or designated emergency contacts.
Fluid monitoring: The HW-103 sensor tracks volumetric content in saline and dialysis bag levels.
Vital monitoring: BMP280 continuously measures temperature and pressure, ensuring patients’ health status is observed without interruption.
How we built it
We developed the system using the Nordic 7002 DK, integrating multiple sensors to capture, process, and transmit patient data efficiently.
Challenges we ran into
Navigating the Nordic SDK and familiarizing ourselves with the 7002 DK was initially challenging. Connecting the sensors and reading data reliably required experimentation and troubleshooting.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully integrated all sensors and displayed live patient data within 24 hours on a new development kit
What we learned
Hands-on experience with Nordic development boards, sensor integration, and real-time data monitoring, strengthening our skills in IoT health applications.
What's next for NordicLife
Using edge based ML we can run predictive and diagnostic tests on data for continuous monitoring and better recovery .
