Inspiration

We’ve all wasted time bouncing between study spots that look promising but end up being too loud, too hot, too crowded, or lacking Wi-Fi and outlets. We wanted to create something that takes the guesswork out of finding a productive place to work.

What it does

NookWorm maps study spots around campus and provides real-time data on sound levels, temperature, Wi-Fi strength, outlet availability, and even overall busyness. Users can filter locations based on preferences like coffee, dining options, or quiet zones. With AI-driven recommendations and community reviews, NookWorm helps every student discover the nook that matches their needs.

How we built it

We designed a prototype app that integrates real-time sensors for sound and temperature, combined with crowd-sourced data for Wi-Fi, outlets, and reviews. Using mapping tools, we visualized each spot with intuitive icons and color-coded indicators, supported by filters and AI-generated suggestions.

Challenges we ran into

Building accurate sound-level detection that translates decibels into meaningful, color-coded feedback.

Combining environmental sensors with user-reported data into a smooth, reliable interface.

Balancing how much detail to present while keeping the design clean and user-friendly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Developing a functional prototype that visualizes study spots with real-time conditions.

Creating an accessible, student-centered tool that solves a problem we’ve all faced.

Designing AI-powered recommendations to help students find the best fit for their study habits.

What we learned

We learned how to connect physical data (sound, temperature) with digital visualization in a way that feels useful, not overwhelming. We also discovered the importance of balancing technology with user input—sometimes peer reviews are just as valuable as raw data.

What's next for NookWorm

We plan to expand NookWorm by:

Partnering with campuses to integrate real building data (HVAC systems, occupancy sensors).

Building a larger community review system with tags and keywords for personalized search.

Scaling the app beyond schools to libraries, coworking spaces, and public areas where people gather to focus.
