Inspiration
In 2020, we heard many conversations mentioning that voter turnout had drastically increased compared to recent years. For instance, Pew Research Center stated “The elections of 2018, 2020 and 2022 were three of the highest-turnout U.S. elections of their respective types in decades” (Voter turnout in US elections, 2018-2022 | Pew Research Center). Along with the discussion of previous spikes in voter turnout, we also recently had the United States 2024 presidential election, so it felt culturally relevant to explore the topic of voting patterns. We were interested in exploring how often people had voted prior to the 2020 election. We also wanted to gain a sociological understanding of why people didn’t vote, by looking at demographic data like income, levels of education, age groups, etc.
