Inspiration
The digital nomad lifestyle is such a different approach to daily life that it is inspiring for me to look into the challenges of the lifestyle and how this changes the needs to digital tools. The pitch for an app by Quin made me think about the possibilities which this lifestyle has and I really wanted to take the challenge to transform it into an app.
What it does
The app centers around two main things: You existing connections to people you know and the route you have in mind for the upcoming time. You can connect to people you know or meet along your trip and add them to your contacts and keep in touch. It then allows you to see when you will cross routes with your existing connections and you can make new connections by a swiping feature. But this is limited to people you will cross routes yet and you always see the connection path between you and the other people. The safest way to trust new people is to have trusted friends that can assure you that the other person is fun. Additionally you can look for shops along your route that can help you tune your setup.
How we built it
I started the app with a design phase, thinking about the different features and the apps design. From there on I went into a first bigger building phase with Claude code to set up the structure and all the basic features. From there on I am now in the phase to test all the features with a mocked data set to make sure a basic functionality is there and robust before sending it out to be used by a growing network of nomads.
Challenges we ran into
The interconnectivity between users and the dependencies of their actions. Just using a minimalistic backend in firebase it is not easy to ensure that follow, matching, chat and unfollow actions are correctly mirrored to the affected user.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The simple setup of the app and the basic functionality reached that quickly which is tailored to the use case of people on the road. Every feature is really tailored to that and of no use for people outside. This makes sure the app stays relevant for the target group.
What we learned
Build a MVP as quick as possible and then look deep into each feature to check the relevance and the technical implementation. Don't get lost in tiny features and just scrap it if you realize it is complicated to build and not that important.
What's next for NomadLoop
Robustification of the functionality and performance improvements. Going for a public launch of the application and integrating real shopowners to offer services.
