Inspiration
Nomad Vista was born from our own frustrating experiences as remote workers. We were trapped in the "digital nomad research loop": 20+ browser tabs open, trying to cross-reference visa rules from an official government site, cost-of-living, community links from dozens of Facebook groups, same with accommodation apps and platforms. It was chaotic, inefficient going around in circles, and stressful. We realized the freedom of the lifestyle was being choked by the friction of planning it. We were inspired to build the tool we desperately wished we had: a single, intelligent, and beautiful platform that consolidates everything a nomad needs to confidently choose their next home base. It has to be a delight to use.
What it does
Nomad Vista is the intelligent compass for the modern digital nomad. It does two core things: Personalized City Matching: Users create a detailed profile with their budget, profession, climate preferences, hobbies, and lifestyle needs. Our smart algorithm instantly analyzes this profile and recommends the top 3 most suitable cities in the world, complete with a compatibility score. Unified City Dashboard: For any city, users get a single, consolidated dashboard with all critical information, including: Up-to-date visa requirements tailored to their nationality. A realistic breakdown of the monthly cost of living. Direct links to active social groups, eg. WhatsApp and Facebook community groups. Curated portals for finding long-term accommodation. Essential local apps and services for a smooth landing.
How we built it
We approached this hackathon with a focus on building a functional core that could be scaled. Frontend: We used React Native to develop a cross-platform mobile application, allowing us to maintain a single codebase for both iOS and Android. Backend: The core logic is powered by a React API. This handles user profile management, the matching algorithm logic, and serves up city data. Database: We architected a PostgreSQL database to store structured city and user data. The schema is designed to be flexible, allowing us to easily add new data points (like co-working spaces or internet speed metrics) in the future. Data Aggregation: For this prototype, we sourced initial data from a mix of public APIs and curated lists to populate our database for a handful of popular nomad cities, proving the concept of the unified dashboard.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was data integrity and aggregation. Sourcing accurate, up-to-the-minute information for something as fluid as visa regulations or as subjective as "community vibe" is incredibly difficult. Manually collecting this for even a few cities was time-consuming. To overcome this, we made a strategic decision to focus on building a robust system that, in the future, could support community-driven updates. We built the dashboard to be easily updatable, prioritizing a scalable framework over a massive (but quickly outdated) dataset.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of creating a functional prototype that solves a real, painful problem. Our biggest accomplishment is the Unified City Dashboard. Seeing all the critical information—from visa rules to community links—consolidated into one clean, elegant screen was a huge "aha!" moment. We are also proud of the initial version of our matching algorithm. It successfully takes a complex set of user preferences and produces relevant, logical city recommendations, which validates the core premise of our project.
What we learned
Throughout this hackathon, we learned two crucial lessons: The value of good curation, not just data. Simply having data isn't enough. The real value we provide is in consolidating, verifying, and presenting up to date data in a way that is easy to digest and act upon. User We need to build a strong community for a platform like this to thrive long-term. We learned that building tools to empower the community to contribute and validate data is just as important as the initial data aggregation itself.
What's next for Nomad Vista
Our vision for Nomad Vista extends far beyond this hackathon. Our roadmap is focused on partner growth and community: Expand the Database: Scale from our prototype cities to the top 50 digital nomad hubs worldwide, enriching our dataset with more granular information like safety ratings, internet speed tests, and healthcare quality. Build Community Features: Implement a user review system for cities and co-working spaces. Create a feature for users to submit and validate data, ensuring our information remains the most current and reliable on the web. Launch a Public Beta: Get Nomad Vista into the hands of real digital nomads to gather feedback and iterate on our features. Develop Partnerships: Begin integrating affiliate partnerships for flights, insurance, and accommodation to build a sustainable business model that keeps the core product valuable and accessible.
