Noken

Inspiration

We were inspired by forum posts about predatory business practices which use minorities as mere tokens for the sake of marketing the company as diverse. This is very damaging for the minority for a multitude of reasons.

What it does

Import spreadsheet of company demographic data, input company address --> Get bias ratings of company race and gender demographics to country, state, and city demographics.

How we built it

A Google Slide deck with linked slides to make a convincing app mockup.

Challenges we ran into

We had issues linking some of the slides together and creating the pie charts.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of our polished mockup, which represents the solution very convincingly.

What we learned

We learned about the dangers of tokenism, and how companies can fabricate diversity data at the expense of the minority. We also learned advanced Google Slides tricks, and how to work as a team.

What's next for Noken

Perhaps more demographic data could be considered, such as education/qualification level. More specific demographics such as race and gender or gender and education level could also be considered.
