Inspiration & Findings
Noir presents an innovative global art initiative, showcasing new XR experiences on existing illustrations in urban landscapes around the world. Publicly accessible, it allows artists work to be found easier and deepen their connection with spectators creating a vast, open-air gallery.
This work is publicly available , for the entirety if its life and is valued uniquely.
Key Insights on Valuation
Most valuations are associated with boutique agencies that create street art for brands and one-off events. This is the space where most of the well known industry competitors sit.
The main driver of street art valuation is popularity, and with NOIR we can use engagement metrics to track popularity and sentiment with no app download.
How Receptive are Artist?
Artist are interested but not adept or trained on developing with tech tools .
“I’m old school.. So if I do something like that, I wouldn’t be doing any computer work.. Maybe just the physical art itself.” - DS7, Boston"
Partnering with Black Terminus ( easy to use mobile AR application) with free training can ease the adoption.
It is also traditionally exclusive market when it comes to contracts for murals . Creating more avenues for compensation especially for less known artists is welcomed from public art community.
"Tipping could work.. But I’d participate for fun as an early adopter in case it’s popular.- Hailey G., Dallas
How it Works
Each artwork is accompanied by a scannable code, bridging the physical art with a digital experience. Viewers can scan these codes to access a platform for reading and posting comments about the art, fostering an interactive community. Comments can be liked and replied too with the most popular ones being shown first to visitors. The artist portal is an exhibit manager tracking visits , options to manage comments, and see businesses looking for artists for contracts.
How we built it
We built it using Niantic 8th wall.
- Created ShapesXR demo using assets made with midjourney , meshy, blender, and unity
- Created AR art assets with inshot, muglife, canva
- Developed artist portal in React
Challenges we ran into
- Connecting data base in 8th wall on a short timeline
- Merging VPS and image targeting
- Getting floating to anchor in the world well
- Measuring monetization in the art market
- Challenge to get alpha key / green screen working properly to display AR component
- 8th wall doesn't allow exporting projects ( had to copy and past into codeberg manually
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Use Shapes XR prototyping demo/experience
- Learning new tools/ frameworks
- Creating XR demo , working prototype, website signup page
- Creating AR experience that's light and available on all devices with webXR ( through 8th wall)
What we learned
- Aggressive deadlines makes people go beyond what they thought was possible
- Web XR is a fantastic portal to get anyone with a smart device chance to have world bending AR experiences
- The mural market is vibrant but has barriers for new artist with the largest artist being well compensated but far and few in-between
What's next for Noir
- Implementing feature requests
- Connecting Noir with Black Terminus mobile Application
- Geocaching more artists and pieces across cities
- Adding historical timeline to see how art evolved over time
- Finding organizations that would like to support their city through Noir
- Create a portal for muralists to Connect with Business owners
