Inspiration
Nutrition is the foundation for good mental, physical, and emotional health. What if we could intelligently leverage this fact to place individuals who have limited access to quality food sources in the best position to enable their success? I was motivated by this idea and was led to develop a web app which allowed for users to plan meals based on food inflation predictions and reduce food waste.
What it does
NoFoodWaste is a meal planning tool that leverages the power of machine learning and AI to not only predict global food inflation but also create meals from its findings to reduce food waste. The user is prompted to provide their grocery receipt. From this input, the app uses machine learning algorithms and generative AI to create meals that consist of ingredients with the lowest inflation rates at the given target date. The tool is very scalable and has use cases for NGOs providing meal aid in developing countries or impoverished individuals, aligning with UN sustainability and finance goals.
How we built it
I built this by leveraging many of the latest cutting-edge technologies and platforms:
- Frontend: Next.js with TypeScript and Tailwind CSS
- Backend: Node.js
- Machine Learning: Neural networks for predicting changing food prices using a global food inflation dataset consisting of over 700,000 foods
- AI: Claude API to create sustainable meals from the predicted ingredients
Challenges we ran into
I ran into challenges transferring the data from the ML price predictor into the web app.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of the fact that I was able to produce a working project that addresses a real issue.
What we learned
Learn to utilize AI to solve the real-world problem
What's next for NoFoodWaste
After this, I plan on creating new iterations to the project to ensure that it functions as envisioned. Additionally, I want to add more support and use cases with the data that the user provides.
