Inspiration

I was trying to explore and use different node libraries and apis and socket.io seemed interesting. I liked the idea of how users can communicate real time and also share location data using Google's geolocation api.

What it does

It allows users to join chat rooms and communicate via messaging with other users in the same chat room. Users can also share their location which is enabled via Google's geolocation api.

How I built it

I used socket.io, node and express to build this webapp.

Challenges I ran into

I was using socket.io for the first time so I had to read up on its documentation. There were a lot of callbacks, and event listener/emitter setup involved which needed some getting used to. Managing the front end was difficult so I had to take help from other online sources to implement functionalities like scrolling.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I/m proud of using a new tool/library to build a real-time messaging application.

What I learned

I learned about callbacks, event listeners/emitter and socket.io in general.

What's next for node-chat-app

I will try to enable authentication and sharing of files like pictures or videos.
