Inspiration

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw an unprecedented change in the way people work. We learned that the remote workstyle is here to stay. However, we see distributed employees feel isolated and are looking for a deeper connection with their colleagues. Nock was an idea generated through meaningful, in-person interactions in the Ivey Business School MBA program that wouldn't have been possible in a remote environment. Nock finally started to take shape at Hack Western 9 this weekend.

What it does

Nock creates profiles of employees based on their roles, likes, interests, and anything else that is unique to them. The product then sends employee data to a database that aggregates the profiles and picks out two employees based on their roles, likes, and interests to have a conversation and/or play a game.

How we built it

The application was built using the ReactJS library with form generation as well as a backend written in ExpressJS that connects to a MongoDB Atlas Cluster.

Challenges we ran into

Originally, the ambition for Nock was much higher as we strived to create a Full-Stack Web Application with the MERN stack and using Redux. We realized that a lot of these features were too complex for the challenge at hand and ended up having to scrap the frontend.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The design of the UI developed in Figma as well as a fantastic presentation slide deck.

What we learned

That we cannot bite off more than we can chew and should give important consideration to our skills and the deadline.

What's next for Nock

Development plan with a product-market fit strategy. An application will be submitted to Western's Accelerator and the team will be pursuing new venture competitions across Canada and the United States.
