🌌 Inspiration

We wanted to build a horror escape game that feels simple but unforgettable, something teens could dare each other to play, share clips of, and scream about. Inspired by viral jump-scare moments, escape rooms, and classic horror films, we created a mechanic where the camera flash is your only defense. It lights the way for a second, but also repels the ghosts hunting you.

👻 What it does

  • Players are trapped in a dark, twisting forest.
  • Their only tool: an old camera with a flash.
  • Every flash lights the path, or reveals the ghosts creeping closer.
  • The ghosts can be repelled for a moment, but they never stop chasing.
  • The goal: survive the fear, find the exit, and escape before it’s too late.

🛠️ How we built it

  • Built in Horizon Worlds with a small team of first-time creators.
  • Used AI tools to accelerate asset creation, scripting, and sounds.
  • Designed the flash mechanic so players only see pieces of the world at a time, keeping the tension alive.
  • Layered in horror audio, eerie atmosphere, and surprise events to heighten fear.

🚧 Challenges we ran into

  • Balancing the game so it’s scary but still fun.
  • Designing a mechanic that’s simple (flash + run) but still suspenseful.
  • No typescript knowledge.
  • Creating believable darkness and shadows inside Horizon’s visual limits.
  • Fixing bugs and making the overall experience feel finished.

🏆 Accomplishments that we are proud of

  • Built a fully playable horror escape in just a few days.
  • Invented a unique flash mechanic that’s scary, surprising, and memorable.
  • Designed an environment that feels immersive.
  • Made something perfect for streaming, sharing, and viral reaction clips.

📚 What we learned

  • How to use light and sound design to create fear with minimal assets.
  • The value of rapid prototyping, build, break, fix, repeat.
  • That collaboration and adapting fast are key in Horizon’s environment.
  • How powerful a simple mechanic can be if executed with the right suspense.

🔮 What’s next for No Way Out

  • Multiplayer mode: survive together or sacrifice your friends.
  • New maps: haunted school, abandoned hospital, underground tunnels.
  • Leaderboards: who escapes fastest, who flashes the least.
