Inspiration

Plastic pollution is a serious threat to our planet and all of its inhabitants. I was inspired to create No Space 4 Waste by images of wildlife trying to navigate a rapidly changing environment which is become increasingly polluted by single use plastic waste.

Sea turtle impeded by plastic pollution

Upon seeing these images I tried to imaging what it would be like to have my own life disrupted by plastic pollution and to better comprehend the extent of plastic pollution.

What it does

Given that plastic pollution generally accumulates in sparsely populated places or aquatic environments it can be hard for people to imagine the extent of plastic pollution and the harm it causes. Because of the spatial disconnect between plastic waste production and the resulting consequences of plastic pollution, it can be challenging to motivate people to change their consumption habits and to reduce the impact of plastic pollution on our environment.

No Space 4 Waste allows users to experience the extent of plastic pollution on a human scale. Users will get a sense of how much space plastic pollution occupies and how plastic pollution can choke an environment making it difficult to navigate, and live in.

No Space 4 Waste sends the message that there is not only no physical space for single use plastic waste in our society but also underlines that fact that we need to change our consumption habits to remove the metaphoric space we have created for single use plastic waste in our convenience driven, disposable lifestyles.

How we built it

I used adobe aero and Google's geospatial creator to create the AR experience by placing 3D objects I created in Blender into the real world scene.

Challenges we ran into

It was challenging to rending a large number of objects with my PC, ideally i would have liked to generate life sized water bottles equivalent to the number of bottles consumed each day in the united stated but this was not possible on my computer. However i am still pleased with the effect of my AR experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I think this is a really impactful tool which can genuinely help people comprehend the extent of plastic pollution and help change our relationship with single use plastic production.

What we learned

AR experiences are actually pretty simple to make and are a great new medium to express ideas, invoke emotion and capture the imagination.

What's next for No Space 4 Waste

I would like to use a render farm to export the graphics at higher resolution and life sized. I would also like to place these instalments in cities around the world.
