Inspiration
In recent years we’ve seen a significant increase in bike related accidents, especially in California. In an age where eco-friendly transportation is becoming more popular, the relevance of this question is only increasing. Recently, a group of friends and I went on a biking trip from San Jose to San Francisco and it ended up taking us on a couple highways that had very thin bike lanes with overgrown sections of brush that even pushed us onto the car lanes. We hope this app can help prevent some of this unnecessary risk and reduce accidents.
What it does
We have two primary functions of our webpage; give a clear and understandable GIS map showing the danger risks of roads and a rerouting system that guides bikers away from dangerous routes using public databases that are normally updated and a user report system that inputs a request for a manager to recheck the route.
How we built it
We built this page primarily through vibe coding using Cursor and Claude Code. First we brainstormed ideas, going through two other ideas before settling on AllRoute. We then continued to flesh out our idea on a google doc before prompting Cursor to begin generating the map and routing system. Simultaneously, a couple of us began working on UI and practicing our pitch and demonstration.
Challenges we ran into
The primary challenge we ran into was issues with the map, we found that there were many bugs that appeared on the map and routing ranging from making circles around dangerous flagged areas rather than simply avoiding them to taking coastal routes that don’t exist or giving us ferry routes.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of how well our webpage worked seeing as this was our first hackathon for most of us. We think that our idea is really important and relevant and if implemented properly can provide a lot of meaningful impact.
What we learned
We learned that we should focus on implementation earlier to allow Cursor the time to finish coding and give us the time to look through it and decode. We also learned that we should probably better distribute the work though a lot of the time constraint is on Cursor and its ability to process and run code.
What's next for AllRoute?
We plan on incorporating new features to improve safety and accessibility to all forms of transportation including walking (especially safety at night), special transportation like wheel chairs or crutches, and potentially even swimming.
