Inspiration
I turned 19 this summer and I've been struggling with a porn addiction since I was probably 14-15 years old. I've tried a lot of methods to quit porn and finally I've come across the Easy Peasy Method. The core philosophy of it is to distance yourself as much as possible from things that instigate the porn watching cycle for you. This can be just a peak at a model or an actress online, going down the rabbit hole of dancing around the forbidden red line for hours. Then I tried chrome extensions that block sites and keywords but I could just simply disable them. I wanted a concrete solution that would completely stop me from viewing porn or explicit pictures online.
That's why I built NoPornForever - to break free from this vicious cycle of wasting my time, energy, and brain cells.
It is a clever solution to isolate pornographic sites, images and text content on your desktop, browser and also you phone!
What it does
Part I: Desktop Level It is a DNS proxy that sits underneath the network layer and filters all the pornographic websites from a vast list of sites from hagezi/dns-blocklists/nsfw.txt.
Part II: Browser Level Then there is a chrome extension that blocks explicitly tagged keywords and images using a transformer trained nsfw text and image classifier model
Part III: Mobile Level It is a little island that constantly monitors for explicit sites, text and images that occur on your phone and closes that app.
How we built it
The desktop version was built in GO Chrome extension was built in javascript and classifier was built in python Mobile version was built in Flutter
Challenges we ran into
- getting the DNS blocking script to work regardless of the user having a vpn
- having the browser extension lock out guest mode and incognito mode
- have the mobile app to close session when explicit intent is detected without harming user session
What's next for No Porn Forever
- Currently it only works for windows, chrome and android
- millions of people around the world use other technologies than these three
- I would love to make it for macos, ios and linux as well
