Inspiration

The world's use of plastic is polluting our waterways and endangering wildlife. Plastic has many good uses, but overuse has led to an explosion of waste. We have been concerned by the thoughtless proliferation of plastic products without regard to the long-term effects plastic waste has on our environment.

What it does

"No Plastic" helps you become a wise consumer of plastic products and creative in avoiding them altogether. We provide tips and information to guide the user to make choices and lifestyle decisions that are more eco-friendly.

How we built it

We used the Alexa SDK, lambda, node.js and a LEMP backend powered by an EC2 server.

Challenges we ran into

We wanted to present the information in a easy and pleasing way. To this end we had to design the user interface and search model to be responsive and powerful.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

From the start we made the skill take advantage of a screen display. While not necessary to enjoy the skill, a screen allows the user to scroll through the categories and tips in an easy to use format. Additionally, we accompany the tips with interesting artwork relevant to the information.

What we learned

We learned how important it is to be conscious of our daily consumer choices and how practical it can be to make eco-friendly decisions.

What's next for No Plastic

We will be adding tips, artwork, and user interface variety to make the skill more engaging.
