No More Counterfeit

Inspiration

The Internet makes trading goods and services via e-commerce easier. However, the openness of the Internet hidden names behind  online transactions provides counterfeiters with easy access to markets and low risk of detection. Because of that, we would like to build an app that can fight against counterfeit and allows better communication and education about counterfeit .

What it does

• First, when visiting the app, user needs to log in to their accounts, after that, users such as companies or entrepreneurs can protect their products from counterfeit, by registering trademark not only in the US but globally. There are different steps for companies to register trademark in the US, further, if they want to register trademark globally, they can either register using the Madrid protocol or hire our local lawyers to assist them with the process. 
• Further, functions to collect ownership information for expensive trademarked products such as iPhone, luxurious goods, etc. When the original owner wants to transfer the ownership of an expensive product to the other, he/she needs to fill in the form. There will be verification process checking owner ID number and type of ID. By doing so, we can track the history of trademarked items and can alert original owners if there are duplicate serial ID of one product being reported to the system with two different owners’ name.
• The scan QR code function allows law enforcement authorities, companies, and buyers to identify counterfeits easily by scanning the barcode of the product and the code will be searched in the system for the matched code. Further, we use ML model to classify and detect if the products are fake or not through matching image and classification model.
• Many buyers who encountered fake products or were scammed could not find the right place to report cases or seek help. Thus, we would like to have the function that allows buyers to report counterfeit cases. When they click the “Report Fake Items” button, users will be led to a form in which they can fill in information After that, the case will be reviewed by admin and if it is a real counterfeit case, the user will be rewarded with small amount of cash ($5/ $10). Funds for this reward program will be from companies with branded products who get benefits from catching thieves or criminals who produce counterfeit products.
• In order to encourage more people to learn about counterfeit and provide updated information about counterfeit events globally, we would like to build a community and forums for people to visit and discuss with others about counterfeit topics that they are passionate about. Further, YouTube and TikTok are popular platforms that attract large number of viewers. Thus, we would like to link YouTube as well as TikTok Channels in the app that post informational videos about different counterfeit issues to educate people.
• All collected data in the app are stored in Amazon DynamoDB and Amazon S3. In order to query data in Amazon S3 and DynamoDB, we can use Athena to create SQL queries for further data analytics. Moreover, in order to visualize data and create metrics in more meaningful ways, we use Amazon QuickSight to build the visualization. The analysis and info can be used by government, FBI, companies, etc. to analyze and detect crime patterns or behaviors of criminals who create counterfeit.

We built the prototype using Figma. 

Challenges we ran into

We had challenges to write the paper in 5 pages and try to convey and visualize all functions of the app.

We were able to build a prototype in figma, wrote a 5 pages of paper to explain our idea.

What we learned

We learnt to design in figma and learnt about different counterfeit issues.
