Inspiration
As PhD students in bioengineering at Pitt, we work with Alzheimer's patients in our research and it's heart breaking to see that these patients can't recognize the faces and the names of their loved ones. We want to design an AI based tool to help these patients during social interactions.
What it does
The face recognition systems helps Alzheimer's patients recall the names of their loved ones in real time. Additionally, it reminds the patients of their relationship with the person that they are interacting.
How we built it
We built the face recognition system by leveraging pre-trained deep learning models and conducted model inference during live web-cam footage capture.
Challenges we ran into
Originally, we were trying to host our face detection system on a mobile app. However, due to time constraint, we weren't able to optimize the size of the system for mobile devices.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is our first hackathon and we were proud that we successfully implemented our facial recognition system within a short period of time.
What we learned
Deep learning model inference and it's interaction with computer vision.
What's next for no-brainer
The next step would be taking the facial recognition system to mobile devices and AR devices.
