Inspiration

"Nearly 15 percent of U.S. households—and nearly 18 percent of households with children—reported food insecurity early in the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a survey conducted via social media by researchers at NYU School of Global Public Health. Prior to the pandemic, approximately 11% of households in the United States were food insecure, lacking consistent access to enough food—both in quality and quantity—for an active, healthy life". Within the past year alone, we've seen a troubling rise in inflation, leading to higher prices for groceries, which in turn has forced people to change how they shop for food and essentials.

Access to food should be a basic right for everyone, however, almost 821 million people in the world do not have access to enough food. This is a very alarming number when noted that up to 40% of the food in the United States is wasted.

Our team recognized this and decided to help address this issue by providing a platform to allow businesses to donate their leftover food in an easy, simple, and safe way. Therefore, we came up with No Body Left Behind, a website that makes it easier for organizations to connect with and drop-off goods directly to food banks and distribution centers that support communities in need.

What it does

As of today, our website:

  1. Provides information about food insecurity in the United States
  2. Provides tips and suggestions to help curb food insecurity such as; shopping smarter, storing food correctly and learning how to preserve food
  3. Our website serves as a tool for restaurants, supermarkets and individuals to schedule drop-offs of excess food that does not sell or get used to food banks and other community organizations in need
  4. Informs others about food pantries

How we built it

Our frontend is built in HTML, CSS & Bootstrap

Challenges we ran into

Deploying our website to github pages and how it all came together. Learning how to incorporate data from online and navigating some form of interactivity for our users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This was a first Hackathon for us all. And we're excited to keep learning and educating ourselves on how to support our local communities. Lastly, we're proud of how it all turned out!

What we learned

Through this process, we learned how to work well as a team and call upon one another's strengths. We learned through our research areas that are most in need of food support. And we also discovered some areas of improvement that we can improve on in terms of our coding abilities.

What's next for No Body Left Behind

Expanding our research to include other major cities and providing all businesses, individuals and organizations that would like to donate food an opportunity to do so. Improving our access to data so we can provide businesses an inside look on areas closest to them, most in need of their support. And closing the gap between large corporations and food insecurity for major cities. In addition to that, our goal is to be the bridge to bring corporations and local communities to work together positively, which will benefit society as a whole.
