Overview

NKI Frontier: Optimizing LLMs for Trainium is a hardware-aware language model training project built for the AWS Trainium Frontier Competition.

The goal is to train a language model from scratch on AWS Trainium and improve its validation performance within the competition's fixed training-time budget.

What We Are Building

The project focuses on co-designing the model, training loop, optimizer, data sampling strategy, and Trainium-specific kernels to make training more efficient.

Instead of using pretrained weights, the model is trained from scratch using the competition-provided dataset and evaluation pipeline.

Why Trainium?

AWS Trainium provides specialized hardware for machine learning workloads. However, achieving good performance requires understanding how the model and training workload interact with the hardware.

Our approach explores hardware-aware optimization rather than treating the accelerator as a black box.

Key Areas

  • Language model architecture optimization
  • Training-loop optimization
  • Optimizer experimentation
  • Data sampling strategies
  • AWS Neuron optimization
  • NKI kernel optimization
  • Distributed training
  • Memory and compute efficiency
  • Validation performance optimization

Challenges

The main challenge is balancing model quality and training efficiency under a strict time limit.

Every architectural or training change must be evaluated against the validation metric while keeping the training process within the competition budget.

Learning

Through this project, we are exploring practical LLM training on dedicated AI accelerators and learning how hardware-aware decisions can affect model training efficiency and final performance.

Competition Goal

Our goal is to build an efficient language model training pipeline that achieves strong validation performance on AWS Trainium while staying within the competition constraints.
