Inspiration
NJIT students are provided with multiple resources for their time in college. Students use these different web sites to check their tuition balance, search for on campus jobs, check for common exam dates etc. However, finding the right link often takes longer than the task itself. We wanted one hub where a student can ask a question in plain words and land on the right page.
What it does
NJIT ONE brings campus resources into a single web app. It organizes 113 Highlander Pipeline links into searchable categories, lists campus dining locations with menu and hours links, gives walking directions to 44 campus buildings, and shows the academic calendar with wellness days, schedule changes, and deadlines. Students can add their courses to see their common exam dates on the same calendar ensuring they always stay informed of important dated instead of hearing through word of mouth. With the addition of the AI copilot, answers to questions like "how do I drop a class?" are provided quickly with the matching link. This cuts down the search time that often leads students to frustrations and even avoiding the task all together.
How we built it
We collected every link from Highlander Pipeline and organized it into a data catalog with descriptions and keywords. We added data from NJIT's dining page, campus map, academic calendar, and the Registrar's common exam schedule. We used Claude to structure that data into separate files. In the meantime, we used Figma to design the structure of the web app and its aesthetics. Figma Make was used to generate the interface as a React app, with every page reading from the same catalog. After inputting the files into Figma, the file was save and moved to VS studio where the code was ran again and tested. Then the addition of the copilot was made. Finally, everything was moved to Vercel for final testing.
Challenges we ran into
Since this was all of our first time's working on a project like this, most of us as minimal experience so we were lost on how to begin and then how to combine the work done on the sperate programs. This was solved after we reached out to the mentors which provided a lot of insight. Most student systems sit behind a NJIT log in and offer no way for outside apps to read from them, so we focused on guiding students to the correct website than pulling any private data.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We turned a scattered set of portals into one organized, searchable catalog. The copilot only answers from verified NJIT links, so it never sends a student to a made up page. Most importantly we are proud of how far we came in this project since this is our first time.
What we learned
How to structure data so that one catalog powers the buttons, the search, the calendar, and the copilot at the same time. We learned how to use the provided programs and how to guide their ai through prompts. Most importantly learned the value of teamwork and also acknowledging when to ask for help.
What's next for NJIT ONE
Since NJIT ONE is student made, a lot of updates made from NJIT's sites aren't synchronized automatically. So if this project was to go further than we would have to find a way to be able set that synchronization automatically. As well as being able to sync the data from the parking lots of the amount of cars coming in and out for a more accurate feed.
