Inspiration
The Nittany Guide is an intuitive web application that utilizes artificial intelligence to help Penn State students select their coursework. The platform uses artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to examine course descriptions, prerequisites, and student interests in order to generate customized suggestions. In order to make informed judgments, students can browse thorough information, study courses in a variety of areas, and get insights powered by AI. The technology can offer precise and pertinent insights since the AI models were trained on a large collection of Penn State course information.
Challenges we ran into
Our primary problem was to smoothly integrate the AI components with the online application. Extensive data preparation and prompt engineering were necessary to make sure the AI models could handle the wide diversity of courses and student preferences. Furthermore, maintaining accuracy while refining the recommendation algorithms for real-time speed was a challenging issue requiring careful thought and iterative modifications.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We take great pride in creating a fully functional webapp driven by AI that solves a genuine problem for Penn State students. The Nittany Guide demonstrates how we can use cutting-edge technologies to develop solutions that are focused on the needs of users. We were able to successfully incorporate AI capabilities into a modern and user-friendly interface that students on all campuses could use. During the testing phase, we received favorable comments from our colleagues, which confirmed the project's effectiveness and prospective impact.
What we learned
As Nittany Guide was being developed, we learned a great deal about using AI in practical situations. In order to leverage the raw power of AI models, we have learned how to preprocess and structure educational data. We also improved our web development abilities, especially with regard to designing interfaces that are both user-friendly and responsive. Working together as a team showed us how crucial efficient task delegation, communication, and project management are to the completion of a project successfully.
What’s next for Nittany Guide
We intend to add more features and functionalities to Nittany Guide in the future. To deliver even more thorough insights, we hope to include data from other sources, such as instructor ratings and course reviews. We also want to investigate the intriguing possibility of integrating social aspects, which will enable students to interact and exchange stories. In addition, we plan to work with Penn State administration to perhaps incorporate Nittany Guide into the official university resources so that all students can use it. Our ultimate objective is to enable Penn State students to improve their academic journeys and make informed decisions.
