Inspiration

My school's gardening club had 5 crops requiring 15 different fertilizers. That wasn't very easy so we ended up just using 1 bottle of fertilizer that was good enough. However, the nitrogen levels were really high. In the world, 75 million tonnes of nitrous oxide are emitted due to excess levels of nitrogen in the agricultural industry.

What it does

Nitro aims to fix that by using an NPK sensor to measure the levels of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium in the soil. The data is then sent off the Raspberry Pi to fertilize the crops dynamically. Then farmers can manage the data through a mobile app.

How we built it

We weren't able to build out the solution. However, we used Adobe Figma to make a mockup of what our app would look like. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TCFv0zPJRnCdyL8aAmr_PsBdoH-5C1hC/view?usp=sharing

Challenges we ran into

We had a few team dynamic issues. On the first day, we struggled with assigning tasks to our team members. Our project manager was able to manage that by sending periodic action items in Slack. We also had quite a few debates about the problem we'd address. We let those that were debating try to research problems on their own but ended up settling with ours.

Our team

Serjan Hey! I'm a 16 year old (at the time of writing this) ENTJ who loves networking and fostering new relationships. I'm proud to say I'm a person with a passion - and perhaps I'm too young to realise it, but I've determined that my passion is tech. So I've decided to stay within the realms of the tech ecosystem! I'm fascinated by new technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence. At hackathons and as personal side projects, I've created a number of projects that focus on tackling real-world problems with various technologies.

Fatima Hey! I'm a sophomore from the San Francisco Bay Area. My interests range from neuroscience and artificial intelligence to sustainable energy and synthetic biology— honestly, I'm fascinated with every emerging technology.

Arnay I'm a 15-year-old from Brampton, Ontario, with a passion for Piezoelectricity and Material science!

Alexandre I'm a 15-year-old from Ottawa, Ontario, with a passion for the intersection between IoT and the environment!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are of course insanely happy to have pushed through this event to submit our project. We all need a long nap zzz

What we learned

As beginners to hackathons, we learned a lot of new creative skills. Like using the various tools in Adobe Figma to make our mockup, diagram and image of what the solution could look like. We also upgraded our video-editing toolkit from iMovie to Davinci Resolve. There was a steep learning curve but we plowed through.

What's next for Nitro

Our team could purchase the necessary materials and build out a prototype of our solution. We could then reach-out to industry experts to get validation on our idea and move on from there if we achieve success!
