Project Story: Smart Nutrition AI In Rwanda, where agriculture sustains most families yet 33% of children under 5 face stunting from micronutrient deficiencies, access to personalized nutrition advice remains limited—especially in rural areas. We saw popular calorie-tracking apps like Cal AI working well globally, but they focus on weight loss, not preventing "hidden hunger" with affordable local foods like beans, amaranth, isombe, and matoke. For Hack Days Kigali, we built Smart Nutrition AI—a Gemini-powered Progressive Web App that makes nutrition simple and impactful. Users snap a photo of their meal (guided by a 4-corner frame for perfect shots). Gemini instantly analyzes it for calories, macros, and critical micronutrients (iron, vitamin A, zinc). It then delivers personalized alerts like "Low iron—add greens to prevent anemia" and suggestions tailored to goals set in onboarding: healthy child growth, strong bones/teeth, immunity, or pregnancy support. Fully multilingual (Kinyarwanda, English, French), offline-capable, and designed with Cal AI's clean, intuitive style, our app empowers everyday families to make better choices—helping reduce malnutrition one meal at a time. Built in a day with deep Gemini multimodal integration, Smart Nutrition AI shows how AI can drive real social good in Rwanda.
