Inspiration
Smallholder farmers across Africa face unpredictable climate conditions, poor access to real-time agronomic data, and limited market and financial inclusion. We were inspired by the need to shift farmers from reactive decision-making to predictive, data-driven agriculture, enabling them to adapt, grow, and thrive despite climate and market uncertainties.
What it does
Nimiro AI is an agricultural intelligence platform that combines IoT soil sensors, geospatial data, and predictive analytics to support precision farming. It provides real-time insights on soil health, climate patterns, and crop performance, while also offering market intelligence to connect farmers to buyers. Additionally, it generates data-driven credit scores, enabling farmers to access loans and insurance.
How we built it
We integrated IoT soil sensors to capture real-time soil nutrients and moisture data, combined with satellite and geospatial datasets for climate and crop analysis. Our AI models process this data to generate actionable farming insights. We built a mobile dashboard, SMS-based access for feature phones, and an AI voice agent with multilingual support. We also leveraged tools like Opik to monitor, evaluate, and improve our AI system’s performance and reliability.
Challenges we ran into
- Designing for low-connectivity environments while maintaining real-time insights
- Ensuring accessibility for farmers using feature phones and local languages
- Integrating diverse data sources (IoT + satellite + market data) into one system
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built an end-to-end agricultural intelligence platform tailored for smallholder farmers
- Enabled offline-first access through IoT + SMS integration
- Developed a multilingual AI voice agent for inclusive farmer support
- Created a data-driven credit scoring system to unlock financial inclusion
- Delivered a solution that connects soil → insights → market → finance in one ecosystem
What we learned
- Human-centered design is critical when building for rural communities
- Simplicity and accessibility matter more than complex features
- Trust is built through reliability, transparency, and local relevance
- Combining multiple data streams creates significantly more value than isolated solutions
- AI systems require continuous evaluation and iteration to remain effective in real-world conditions
What's next for NIMIRO AI
- Scaling across more regions in Africa and onboarding more farmers
- Enhancing AI models for more accurate predictive insights and early warning systems
- Expanding partnerships with financial institutions, insurers, and agri-buyers
- Improving sensor capabilities and reducing hardware costs for wider adoption
- Strengthening our marketplace and supply chain integrations
- Advancing climate resilience tools, including parametric insurance triggers and forecasting models
