Inspiration
The painting of the Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq, more often referred to as the Nightwatch, is one of the most famous paintings by Rembrandt van Rijn, one of the most distinguished artists in Amsterdam during the 16th and 17th centuries.
Commissioned by the subjects of the painting in 1639, the painting was unfortunately cut down in 1715 when it was moved to a new location. In 2021, AI was used to reconstruct the cropped sections of the original painting from scans of the remaining original painting and a smaller scale copy of the painting made by Gerrit Lundens.
Inspired by the use of AI to reconstruct the painting, we use AI to enliven the painting and have its characters explain the painting and their milieu.
What it does
Have Captain Frans Banninck Cocq explain the painting to the viewer. We allow him to explain his family history, his life in Amsterdam, and other interesting details about the period to the viewer.
How we built it
We used Simli, Vercel and Elevenlabs to build the interactive demo.
Additionally, we referenced historical information prepared by D.C. Meijer Jr., an art historian who specialized in researching Amsterdam civic guard portraits.
Challenges we ran into
Using Simli's API.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Helping Captain Frans Cocq explain the Rembrandt painting.
What we learned
How to use various APIs, Rembrandt and his art career.
