Inspiration

Being a college student is hard, and sometimes easy tasks can feel huge. Something as simple as taking care of a plant feels impossible when dealing with classes, deadlines, and other commitments, so we created Planterina to turn this experience into something fun and motivating. With a plant that behaves like a pet, anyone can have fun taking care of it, from young children to adults.

What it does

Planterina monitors the wellbeing of any plant by measuring the moisture level on the soil and the amount of sunlight received. It provides active feedback to the user and friendly reminders to water the plant and provide it with fresh light. Planterina uses a speaker to deliver messages and includes eyes and servo-driven eyebrows to express emotion.

How we built it

We cut individual pieces of wood and assembled them with wood glue to form the main structure of the pot. Planterina was designed with a removable face, attached by magnets, for easy access to the electronics, wiring, and batteries compartment. The screen eyes and mouth, and the servo-driven eyebrows give Planterina an expressive face. A moisture sensor and solar panel were included to determine when the plant needs more water or sunlight, and all components are controlled by Arduino boards.
