🎃 Nightmellow – A Halloween Transformation Adventure

🧡 Inspiration

The inspiration for Nightmellow came from classic games like Bounce Tales, where a ball transforms into different forms to solve challenges.
I wanted to recreate that fun transformation mechanic, but with a Halloween twist — where a cute candy ball travels through spooky worlds to deliver treats to kids.

👻 What It Does

Nightmellow is a Halloween-themed 2D game where the player controls a candy ball that can transform into three unique forms:

  1. Candy Ball – fast rolling and balanced jumping
  2. Marshmallow – cannot jump but floats on water
  3. Jelly – performs long jumps and can stomp downward mid-air

Goal: Avoid monsters, survive obstacles, use transformations strategically, and bring candy to the kids waiting at the end.

🛠 How We Built It

Nightmellow was created using:

  1. Phaser – the main game engine
  2. Kiro – for AI-assisted coding and asset generation
  3. Custom assets – most images created with ChatGPT Go
  4. Backgrounds – taken from:

  5. SFX + BGM – from Pixabay.com

🧩 Challenges We Ran Into

Some major challenges included:

  1. Designing physics for three different ball forms
  2. Making transformations feel smooth and natural
  3. Creating loopable parallax backgrounds
  4. Implementing water physics for the Marshmallow form
  5. Balancing level difficulty while keeping gameplay fun
  6. Fixing unexpected bugs during form switching

🏆 Accomplishments We’re Proud Of

  • Fully functional three-form transformation system
  • Smooth multi-layer parallax scrolling
  • Cute + spooky art style made from scratch
  • Realistic water floating mechanics
  • Custom death screens
  • A complete playable level featuring enemies and obstacles

📚 What We Learned

  1. Deep use of Phaser’s physics engine
  2. Structuring a larger, multi-system game project
  3. Debugging issues caused by dynamic transformations
  4. How AI tools like Kiro improve both coding and asset creation
  5. The importance of polish, UI, and sound design for player experience

🚀 What’s Next for Nightmellow

  • More levels with new themes (forest, graveyard, candy world)
  • New enemy types
  • Mobile support (Android + iOS)
  • Better animations and sound design
  • A complete story mode featuring the candy and Halloween kids
