Inspiration
Six months ago, my friend shared a very frustrating story about her friends excluding her to visit a new bar. Her opportunities to engage in nightlife has been extremely limited and overlooked as a wheelchair user, either due to lack of accessibility and/or community awareness. I understood her loneliness and wanted to support my friend, despite being provinces apart. We are all twenty-something and exclusion from an integral social aspect of university life should be taken more seriously. That is why, I created Nightly.
What it does
Nightly is a unique social media platform designed to facilitate nightlife experiences for university students. By enabling users to create customizable profiles, connect with like-minded individuals, and access detailed information about local clubs and events, Nightly aims to address the challenges faced by students when it comes to engaging in nightlife.
Many physically disabled individuals feel discouraged from clubbing due to venue inaccessibility and/or lack of community. Nightly strives to help users overcome these barriers by featuring a dedicated section for accessibility reviews, where disabled users can share their experiences and feedback on the accessibility of different venues. This information will be highly valuable for other disabled users, allowing them to make informed decisions about the venues they choose to visit and ensuring they have an enjoyable clubbing experience.
The app will feature highlighted sections of local club/bar events, deals, and promotions, generating advertising and sponsorship revenue. Nightly will initially target specific university markets with popular downtown clubbing scenes, such as Western, UofT, McGill, and UBC. By focusing on these markets, the app can establish a strong presence within the target student communities.
How we built it
I used the platform, FlutterFlow, to build a functional design that could capture my vision for this mobile app. This platform features the frontend and backend (Flutter uses Dart code) which allows me to make real-time updates in a matter of seconds.
Challenges we ran into
Overcoming the learning curve for programming on FlutterFlow was pretty difficult, since I wasn't very familiar with Dart code. I had watched many YouTube tutorials and articles just to figure out how one specific container works, but I would say it has been a great investment of my time since I will use FlutterFlow more in the future for app-building projects.
Due to the limited time, I was only able to configure the demo for mobile format only (the iPad and laptop formats don't work for all my pages). I also thought working solo was incredibly challenging at first, as it required 120% time and effort from me to complete a task, but I always enjoy a good challenge! Also please note that the demo link may take 30 seconds-ish to load.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of using a new platform and learning how to call API's (I also never done that before :'). I was hesitant in attending this hackathon because I was intimidated by other group's AI expertise, but I realized that it was extremely motivating to be surrounded by their technical innovations and it allowed me to work even harder on my own. The learning process can only be fueled by experiences such as this, so I'm very proud for taking that initiative in attending this hackathon.
What's next for Nightly
I plan on scaling my idea for Nightly and recruiting some friends to make this mobile app into a reality. The app definitely needs tweaking in design & functionality, but I'm proud to see what I've accomplished on my own in such little time. In conclusion, I want to ensure that everyone has equal opportunity to engage in enjoyable activities while in university, and I hope I can make my friend back at home proud.
