Inspiration

Language on the internet evolves faster than ever, and slang often becomes a cultural barrier between generations and communities. We were inspired by that moment when someone says a word you’ve never heard before—and suddenly you feel out of the loop. We wanted to turn that confusion into curiosity by making slang understandable, explorable, and even predictable using data and AI.

What it does

Chamoe analyzes how slang and meme-driven phrases emerge, spread, evolve, and fade across platforms like Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. It lets users explore slang meanings, origins, related terms, popularity over time, and even estimate how long a term might stay culturally relevant through interactive apps and AI-powered exploration.

How we built it

We used Hex as an end-to-end workspace. Public text data is processed using NLP and embeddings to model slang in semantic vector space. Hex notebooks combine SQL, Python, and narrative, semantic models define shared logic, AI agents assist discovery, and interactive data apps make insights accessible to non-technical users.

Challenges we ran into

Slang is noisy, ambiguous, and highly contextual. Distinguishing memes from lasting slang, handling imperfect demographic signals, and preventing AI hallucinations required careful semantic modeling and transparent assumptions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a project that could only exist in Hex
  • Modeled slang evolution using embeddings and time
  • Created playful yet rigorous interactive experiences
  • Made AI insights explainable and auditable

What we learned

Agentic analytics isn’t about replacing analysis—it’s about accelerating insight, storytelling, and trust when humans and AI collaborate in one workflow.

What's next for Chamoe

Expanding language coverage, adding real-time trend detection, and enabling community-driven slang annotation to keep culture truly live.
