Inspiration

Recently, I discovered that blackberry bushes were actually an invasive species in my area. After asking around among family and friends, I realized that most of them did not know that either. In fact, some neighbours had even planted blackberry bushes in their backyards. I wanted to create something that could raise awareness and provide people with information about their local ecosystems so that they could promote native biodiversity.

What it does

After a user provides a postal code, the website provides the user with information about their area. This can range from environmental hazards to invasive species, to wildlife sightings. There is also a map that shows where the sightings were reported. Users can also report sightings and contribute to the database.

How I built it

First I created a basic flowchart with Whimsical to get an idea of how I wanted the website to work. Then I made each page on Wix.

Challenges I ran into

It was difficult managing the workload, as it was my first time doing a solo project.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

It was my first solo project

What I learned

I learned a lot about web development, planning, as well as biodiversity.

What's next for Niche

Creating an app would be beneficial for people to take pictures and report sightings on the fly. It would also provide them with real-time information on their cellphones.
