Inspiration
Nicely was a result of our desire to raise awarness of online harassment bullying. These are two very serious problems in our society, and we believe that Nicely can help in solving them.
What it does
The web application allows the user to enter a Twitter handle and instantly see feedback and analytics of the Tweets from that handle. These analytics include what percentage of their Tweets contain angry sentiment, or other negative sentiments. The web app also gives the user an example of a good tweet and analyzes timestamps to tell the user what times they are more or less likely to post negative tweets.
How we built it
The backend of this application was designed with Flask, Python, and Javascript, and hosted on Microsoft Azure.
Challenges we ran into
Initially, we had planned to include the ability to analyze both Facebook and Twitter posts. However, we ran into challenges regarding authorization and accessing the posts. We were able to successfully get the analyzation of Tweets working, but were unable to get Facebook working in the time that we had.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
In this project, we are not only proud of successfully building a webapp, but also it's potential to help people and bring more awareness to online harassment. We hope that many people will use this web app and that it will improve many lives.
What we learned
The team learned how to use Microsoft Azure, how to use the powerful IBM Watson API, and Twitter API. Additionally, we improved our ability to build a functional webapp.
What's next for Nicely
In the future, we would like to add an option to analyze Facebook posts in addition to Tweets. Nicely doesn't stop here. We see a lot of growth in the application and see that it can be very useful, especially for people who are or who know victims of online harassment.
