Inspiration
We wanted to create a unique, fun nutrition tracking app inspired by data visualizations like the spider graphs used in MBTI personality test results, health progress bars in video games like Minecraft, simple food tracking in the MyFitnessPal app, and caring for an avatar in the Finch app.
What it does
In an amusing, rat-themed experience, NibbleMate helps you identify, break down, meet, and track your nutrition goals. It incentivizes you to get enough nutrients by suggesting foods to fill in gaps in your nutrient log for the day!
How we built it
We brainstormed concepts, sketched wireframes, researched the nutrition tracking market, completed a heuristic evaluation, and prototyped low-fi and then high-fidelity mockups of our app. We primarily used Figma for the design process!
Challenges we ran into
We had so many ideas for this app and struggled to prioritize which features to include in our prototype. We decided to simplify the gamification and design aspects. Working within the time constraint, we worked together to narrow our focus to a more manageable scope, while still leaving room for the hope of adding onto the project in the future!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our secondary research served us well in informing the features of our app; we looked into leading health issues and found that malnutrition is a major concern. Our visual UI design elements are also strong and based in competitive analysis research. We also conducted a heuristic evaluation of our prototype against Jakob Nielson's User-Centered Heuristic Design to help us assess our project's strengths and weaknesses.
What we learned
Our Figma skills grew dramatically. We also learned how to work in a team for a short-term project with people we'd never met before, communicating and brainstorming together while respectfully disagreeing and debating to reach conclusions for important decisions. We learned to detach our identities from our work, allowing us to adopt flexible and adaptable mindsets. We implemented what we were learning in the Designathon workshops we attended, too: UX writing and storytelling, creating cohesive visual identities, and communicating within a group.
What's next for NibbleMate
With more time and resources, we see a real future for this app. We would focus on incorporating hand-drawn illustrations and animations, building out the gamification aspects, adding social features, and incorporating usability testing to identify additional pain points.
