Inspiration
When reading about the Great Green Wall, it occurred to us that an opportunity exists for crowdfunding carbon offset projects- specifically by making tax-deductible crypto donations to nonprofit organizations working in reforestation.
What it does
When a user makes a donation to a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization working in the field of reforestation or tree-planting, they receive an NFT token representing the tree planted. The NFT's metadata contains information such as the location and species of the tree, and an estimated amount of carbon offset by donation.
How we built it
The NFTree project is part of our larger Give XRP app, coded using Javascript and Node.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenges are finding nonprofit partners, as crypto adoption within the nonprofit world is still limited, and working out the tokenomics of the NFT token, as the XRP Ledger (Give XRP's native blockchain) has not yet voted to incorporate native NFT capabilities.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Transitioning to a carbon-neutral economy is one of the most urgent challenges facing humanity today. This project's parent organization, the Center for Collaborative Economics, is honored to collaborate with other like-minded individuals and organizations on this task.
What we learned
A proven track record- including functioning products and reputable partners- is key to growing a project's network.
What's next for NFTree: NFTs Representing Planted Trees
We look forward to finding nonprofits to partner with and beginning to accept donations for our initial charitable "phygital" (digital tokens representing real-world objects) projects. NFTree is one of our initial three projects- the other two being NFTexts (NFTs representing textbooks provided by nonprofits focusing on youth literacy and education) and NARcoin (Narcan/naloxone kits provided by harm reduction organizations working to end the overdose crisis).
