Inspiration

Nexus Travel is a data-driven travel application which fosters greater connection throughout our global community. Nexus provides a simple filter system that predicts travel ideas based on each user's preferences. At the center of our vision is our core value of open-mindedness, allowing users to expand their mindset of global cultures.

What it does

Takes in user preferences and decides on ideal travel locations based on given preferences while fitting the criteria of the user. Users can also lookup more information about specified countries.

How we built it

Using React as our front end framework, the user can interact with several pages that interact with APIs and our Firebase backend.

Challenges we ran into

Being new to hackathons, many of us weren't very experienced in programming competitions. We had to learn new tools like React and Firebase to construct our app. We found that actually implementing learned skills was completely different from using them in the learning setting, which was a great experience. Additionally, we faced struggles related to the styling of our web page since we decided against using a styling library.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Firebase backend stores user preferences so that they don't have to re-enter every time. UI is styled without a styling library giving us more control and involvement in the styling process despite it being more challenging. Most of all, we're proud that we have a fully functional website! Seeing the final product in its entirety is about as rewarding as it gets.

What we learned

We learned the front end framework React as well as how to interact with Firebase. Furthermore, we pointed a web domain to our site for the first time. We also learned what to expect from hackathons since this was our first!

What's next for Nexus Travel App

Using the ml5 AI model to more accurately determine travel locations based on user preferences. We might also touch up on styling and add more small details like a google maps i-frame to display the location of places on a map within our website.
