Background

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer, with a 99% relative survival rate if treated in early stages. A significant proportion of breast cancer in low-income countries is diagnosed at an advanced stage.

About

At Nexus Health, we provide a deeper insight into low-cost ultrasound for breast cancer imaging. Building on the foundations of the Butterfly iQ+ platform, our product is a tumor detection and monitoring algorithm intended for at-home use in low income areas. The first of its kind, our Deep Learned algorithm analyzes 2D ultrasound images in real-time, displaying potential tumor growths and progress over time

Solution

Utilizing a point-of-care ultrasound device, we propose integrating an AI algorithm to eliminate the need for experienced clinicians to perform follow-up visits. Butterfly provides educational videos taught by physicians to guide inexperienced users on basic ultrasound techniques. In addition, an AI-guided detection software will enable patients to confidently perform their own exam. Eliminating the need for office visits or high-cost imaging modalities will make health care more accessible for these patients.

Challenges

A challenge we ran into while hacking was contacting our planned partner, Butterfly. Our goal was to communicate our excitement for this technology and learn more about ways to integrate on their platform.

We are proud of accomplishing in-depth research of the breast cancer pathology and market, and aiming to develop for low-income areas

Takeaways

We learned that breast cancer is a highly under-represented area of care due to the extremely low access of imaging modalities in most low-income areas. Breast cancer has a high survival rate, but not if the cancer is not caught early.

Conclusion

Nexus Health hopes to win Medhacks and continue developing our project into a fully-fledged software platform. We may partner with a university laboratory in order to develop a state of the art algorithm based on current research.
