Inspiration

At karaoke, I often found myself asking the same question: “What should I sing next?”

Even when you know hundreds of songs, choosing the next one can take surprisingly long. Searching through a huge catalog doesn’t really solve the problem — sometimes you just want a few good ideas.

That experience inspired me to build NextUta, a karaoke recommendation app that helps you quickly decide what to sing next.

What it does

NextUta recommends songs based on the song you’re currently singing, your singing history, your favorite eras, and tags such as anime, Vocaloid, classics, or crowd-pleasers.

Instead of overwhelming users with choices, NextUta focuses on recommending just three songs at a time.

Users can also keep track of songs they’ve sung, songs they know, and songs they want to learn. When a recommendation inspires you to sing a song, you can mark it as “Sung” directly from the recommendation.

NextUta also includes a Challenge feature that makes building your karaoke repertoire more fun. Users can explore artists and categories, track their progress, and discover more songs to sing.

How we built it

NextUta was built with Flutter and Firebase.

The app uses a curated song catalog and recommendation logic to connect songs through artists, eras, tags, and other characteristics.

I integrated RevenueCat for subscriptions, AdMob for advertising, and analytics to understand how users discover and interact with recommendations.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was deciding how much information to show.

A karaoke catalog can contain thousands of songs, but showing more choices can actually make deciding harder. After experimenting with the experience, I decided to focus on just three recommendations at a time.

Another challenge was making song tracking feel rewarding rather than like a chore. That led to connecting recommendations directly with the “Sung” action and creating the Challenge feature.

Together, they create a loop:

discover a song → sing it → record it → make progress → discover what to sing next

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

I’m especially proud that NextUta grew from a simple “What should I sing next?” idea into a complete karaoke experience that connects discovery, recommendations, song tracking, and challenges.

Rather than building another large song catalog, I focused on helping users make a decision quickly and then turning every song they sing into progress.

I’m also proud to have taken NextUta all the way from an idea to a real app released on the App Store.

What we learned

Building NextUta taught me that a recommendation app shouldn’t stop at giving users suggestions. Recommendations become much more useful when they lead to an action, and that action becomes part of the user’s progress.

I also learned that more choices aren’t always better. By narrowing recommendations to three songs and connecting discovery with tracking and challenges, NextUta makes choosing and expanding your karaoke repertoire easier and more fun.

What’s next for NextUta

Now that NextUta is live, the next step is to learn from how real users use it.

I want to improve the recommendation experience, expand the song catalog, and keep adding timely songs and categories so users can continue discovering something new.

Most importantly, I want to keep improving the loop between:

discovering → singing → tracking → finding the next song

The goal will stay simple:

Spend less time wondering what to sing, and more time singing.
