Inspiration

In East Africa, thousands of brilliant students face a massive language barrier when trying to learn programming because almost all foundational computer science resources are exclusively in English. We wanted to build a localized, accessible solution that empowers students to learn programming concepts in both Amharic and English, removing friction and opening doors to tech education.

What it does

NextStep Coding is a lightweight Progressive Web App (PWA) designed to deliver bilingual programming education, rigorous assessments, and official certificate verification.

  • Bilingual Learning Modules: Core web development lessons (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) available in Amharic and English.
  • Built-in Assessments: Interactive quizzes requiring a 70% passing score to test knowledge and unlock progress.
  • Final Project & Certification: Students complete a final capstone project to earn verified digital credentials.
  • Mobile & Low-Bandwidth Optimized: Built as a PWA so students with limited computer access can learn directly and smoothly on mobile devices.

How we built it

  • Frontend: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (PWA architecture optimized for mobile and low-data usage).
  • Backend & Database: Supabase / Vercel backend integration for user authentication, progress tracking, and certificate validation.
  • Hosting: Deployed live on Vercel.

Challenges we ran into

  • Accurately translating technical programming terminology into Amharic while keeping industry relevance.
  • Designing a responsive, lightweight UI that performs exceptionally well on low-end mobile devices commonly used by students.

Accomplishments We’re proud of

  • Successfully deployed a production-ready bilingual PWA that bridges the technical language gap by delivering programming education in both Amharic and English.
  • Onboarded active students who are successfully using the platform to learn, complete rigorous assessments, and earn verified digital certificates.
  • Engineered an end-to-end learning and verification loop with structured unit assessments and a digital capstone certification system.
  • Optimized the platform for accessibility and low-bandwidth mobile environments to support students with limited computer hardware access.

What we learned

We gained deep insights into localized ed-tech design, database management with Supabase, and building high-performance progressive web apps tailored for regional student accessibility.

What's next for NextStep Coding

  • Expanding our curriculum to include Python and basic data science modules.
  • Partnering with local high schools and student ambassador networks to scale active user growth and maximize student impact.
