Inspiration

As a pastor, I often see people deeply moved by a Sunday message but struggle to carry it into the rest of the week. The problem is not a lack of content. The challenge is creating a simple rhythm that helps people remember, reflect, pray, and respond.

NextOne Weekly began with one question:

How can one Sunday message become a meaningful spiritual journey for the entire week?

I wanted the experience to feel calm and personal—not like a complicated Bible app, productivity system, or game.

What it does

NextOne Weekly turns one Sunday message into a six-day spiritual journey.

Each daily devotional includes:

• Scripture
• A short reflection
• A prayer
• One practical action

Users can complete each day’s action and review their weekly progress. The experience is available in Traditional Chinese and English and works on both mobile and desktop devices.

How we built it

I built NextOne Weekly through an iterative collaboration with Codex and GPT-5.6.

I began by giving Codex my written product plan, ministry vision, desired user experience, and design principles. Codex translated those requirements into a working mobile-first website with weekly navigation, daily devotional cards, completion states, and progress tracking.

I then provided material from one of my adult Sunday-school lessons. Codex helped organize it into a Sunday introduction followed by six daily devotionals while preserving its central spiritual message.

As I tested the application, I gave Codex specific feedback. Codex updated the code, checked each build, and deployed each improved version.

Challenges and Obstacles

One challenge was making the bilingual experience complete. The interface initially changed languages, but parts of the devotional content remained in Chinese. Codex identified the content-structure problem and created separate English and Traditional Chinese versions for every devotional field.

Another challenge was highlighting the correct day without making the experience distracting. We replaced a fixed highlighted day with local-date awareness and used a calm visual cue that disappears after the day is completed.

English and Chinese also required different typography. Codex adjusted the English reading width and spacing without affecting the Chinese layout.

The most important challenge was preserving theological and pastoral integrity. Codex assisted with structure and implementation, while I remained responsible for the ministry vision, source material, spiritual direction, and final decisions

Accomplishments

I am proud that NextOne Weekly is intentionally simple and complete.

It provides a working bilingual spiritual journey without badges, streaks, social pressure, or gamification. It helps users move naturally from Scripture to reflection, prayer, and one practical action.

I am also proud that I was able to turn existing ministry teaching into a working digital product without being a traditional software developer.

What we learned

I learned that building software begins with understanding people and defining the problem clearly—not with writing code.

I also learned that AI-assisted development works best as a conversation. I provided the purpose, content, judgment, and feedback. Codex accelerated implementation, debugging, testing, refinement, and deployment.

This project showed me that people outside traditional technology backgrounds can use Codex and GPT-5.6 to turn their professional knowledge and lived experience into useful products.

What's next for NextOne Weekly

The next step is to test NextOne Weekly with pastors, churches, small groups, and individual users.

Future development may include a simple content-management process that allows ministry leaders to turn their own Sunday messages into weekly devotional journeys. I also want to improve accessibility, content review, and the process for publishing new bilingual devotional weeks.

The guiding principle will remain the same: keep the experience calm, focused, and spiritually meaningful.
