Inspiration
45 million children are malnourished every single year. Our inspiration was to take these current issues children are facing with lack of money, lack of time to search for healthy recipes, and lack of resources to find healthy alternatives and create a website, NextGen Nutrition, that makes making healthier decisions more efficient and sustainable for children.
What it does
Our website targets children who lack access to healthy alternatives, by having a user-friendly quiz that allows parents to select ingredients readily available at home. These ingredients are then used to scour the internet for healthy recipes that are presented to the user.
How we built it
We used HTML to create a website and show the checkboxes necessary for the questionnaire on the front end. We used the boolean value from the checkboxes to check which ingredients the user selected that they had. Using a series of for-loops and if-statements in the back end, we generated a nutritional recipe based on the ingredients the user selected.
Challenges we ran into
Some of the challenges we faced were due to not having much experience coding in HTML and having to figure things out as we went. After looking to mentors for help, scouring the internet for solutions, and working with our team to debug formatting issues we were able to put together a fully functioning demo. Additionally, learning how to take an idea and transform it into a practical demo that could be done within 24 hours was a challenge because it took a while to hone in on the components that were the most pivotal to our project, and to get distracted by the details and formatting.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
None of us were familiar with website building and its languages such as javascript, CSS, and HTML. We ran into many setbacks such as choosing which framework to use and how to format it. We are proud of utilizing these new languages and creating a website for the first time.
What we learned
We learned about designing a website using HTML and making it user-friendly. We learned how to use various functions in HTML, javascript, and CSS and we learned how to put together these files to create a cohesive website.
What's next for NextGen Nutrition
In the future, we hope to expand NextGen Nutrition’s library in order to provide users with more options. Additionally, we would like to include a new section in our quiz that takes dietary restrictions into account when providing users with recipes. We hope these future steps will allow the website to get a more accurate understanding of the user’s pantries and preferences before providing them with recipe options.
