Station design is today based on assumptions on passenger behaviour, experience & existing standards. The use of real station-based data to validate building- and design concepts is limited. There is a huge potential in analysing the various different data sources that Network Rail has access to in order to optimise the station set-up in a passenger-centric way. This will improve passenger flows and user satisfaction.

What it does

NextStation is a tool that visualises and explores station- & passenger data that helps designers analyse and better understand movement patterns and passenger behavior within stations. Based on this they will be able to draw conclusions on how to optimise the space in order to improve user flow and create a more enjoyable experience for their customers.

How we built it

We talked to mentors, clarified the use cases and brainstormed different approaches. We then dived into the data and tried to find a suitable way to visualise and structure the data sets first. We created a visualisation platform and cross-referenced different data sets with the goal to find interesting insights and passenger patterns that can serve as a base for the data-driven simulator. We built a basic platform that allowed us to visually confirm our hypotheses.

Challenges we ran into

Size of the data, trying to find the most intuitive way to explore and visualise the data insights

Accomplishments that we're proud of

the fact that we chose to work on a difficult and broad challenge which required creative problem solving. We managed to incorporate our mentors' expertise and input into our concept.

What we learned

We learned important aspects when it comes to designing a train station, crowed control measures etc.

What's next for Next Station

Our vision is to build a data-driven simulator that gives recommendations on how to improve the design of existing stations by rearranging essential assets like ticket machines, ticket gates, seating areas. Furthermore the simulations will give direction for design of new stations based on insights from exisitng data integrating with building information modeling (BIM) processes like ArchiCAD or Revit.
