Inspiration

Finding genuinely sustainable, eco-friendly products locally shouldn't feel like a chore. While consumers increasingly want to reduce their carbon footprint and support neighborhood businesses, discovering verified sustainable brands nearby remains fragmented and difficult. We created Nexora to bridge the gap between conscious consumers and local eco-friendly businesses using scalable cloud technology.

What it does

Nexora is a location-aware web platform that connects shoppers with sustainable local brands and zero-waste stores in their immediate area.

  • Interactive Eco-Map: Uses Amazon Location Service to map out verified sustainable stores, farmers' markets, and refill stations near the user.
  • Smart Route Optimization: Calculates the most efficient travel routes for local deliveries and pickups to help minimize carbon emissions.
  • Sustainability Verification & Discovery: Allows users to filter local shops by eco-badges (such as plastic-free, organic, fair-trade, or locally sourced) and browse real-time inventory.

How we built it

We architected Nexora using modern web technologies backed by AWS cloud infrastructure:

  • Frontend: Built a responsive, intuitive user interface using React and Tailwind CSS.
  • Geolocation & Mapping: Integrated Amazon Location Service to render interactive maps, geocode store addresses, and calculate proximity between shoppers and local vendors.
  • Backend & APIs: Powered by serverless functions on AWS Lambda and Amazon API Gateway for fast, low-latency search queries.
  • Database & Hosting: Stored vendor profiles and sustainability metrics in Amazon DynamoDB (or Supabase/PostgreSQL) and deployed the frontend via AWS Amplify.

Challenges we ran into

  • Geospatial Query Accuracy: Tuning radius-based location searches so users see the most relevant local stores without overwhelming the map UI took careful filtering and pagination.
  • Structuring Sustainability Metrics: Designing a clean, standardized data model to categorize diverse eco-friendly practices across different types of local vendors was a key architectural hurdle.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Building a clean, fast map discovery experience that renders local vendor pins and route data smoothly.
  • Designing a scalable cloud architecture that can effortlessly expand from a single neighborhood to cities worldwide.
  • Creating a practical tool that promotes both local economic growth and environmental sustainability.

What we learned

  • How to effectively integrate Amazon Location Service for real-time geocoding, map rendering, and routing.
  • Best practices for connecting serverless AWS backend workflows with a modern frontend state management system.

What's next for Nexora

  • AI Eco-Assistant: Integrating Amazon Bedrock to offer personalized sustainable product swaps and answer user questions about a brand's environmental impact.
  • Carbon Footprint Tracker: Adding a user dashboard that estimates the carbon emissions saved by shopping locally rather than ordering long-distance shipping.
  • Merchant Portal: Launching a dedicated onboarding dashboard for local shop owners to verify their sustainability credentials and manage live promotions.
