Nexora — Make Your Screen Time Count
Inspiration
Television is often used mainly for entertainment, but it can also be a place for learning, relaxation, and meaningful family activities. I created Nexora to explore how artificial intelligence and a TV-friendly interface can make screen time more useful, engaging, and enjoyable.
My goal was to build an experience that encourages people to do more than passively watch a screen.
What It Does
Nexora is an AI-powered, TV-focused web application designed to help people discover meaningful activities through a simple, visually engaging interface.
Its main areas include:
- Learning: Discover educational activities, science topics, quick quizzes, and brain challenges.
- Wellness: Explore ideas for short breaks and healthier screen-time habits.
- Family: Find fun and educational activities that families can enjoy together.
- Nexora AI: Interact with an AI assistant to explore ideas and receive activity suggestions.
The application uses a dark visual theme, prominent cards, clear buttons, and readable text to create an experience suited to larger screens.
How I Built It
I built the frontend using React, JavaScript, and Vite, with CSS for styling and responsive layouts. I used Node.js and Express to create a backend that connects the application to Groq's AI API.
The frontend is deployed on Vercel, while the backend is hosted on Render. This separation allows the application to communicate with the AI service without exposing the API key in the frontend.
I also focused on making the interface straightforward to explore, with distinct activity categories and interactive elements.
Challenges I Faced
One of my main challenges was designing an interface intended for a television-sized display rather than a conventional desktop website. I needed to consider readability, visual hierarchy, clear controls, and an uncluttered layout.
Another challenge was connecting the frontend to a hosted AI backend. I learned how to configure environment variables, connect API endpoints, troubleshoot deployment issues, and handle unexpected AI responses.
Balancing a visually appealing interface with practical functionality also required testing and refinement.
What I Learned
Building Nexora helped me strengthen my understanding of React components, JavaScript state management, API integration, backend development, environment variables, and deploying a full-stack application.
I also learned that creating a TV-focused experience requires a different approach to layout and navigation than building a typical website.
What's Next
I plan to expand the activity library, improve the AI assistant, refine directional navigation for remote controls, and test compatibility with supported Amazon Fire TV hardware or development environments.
Future improvements could also include more interactive quizzes, personalized activity suggestions, and additional family-friendly experiences.
Conclusion
Nexora explores a simple idea: screen time can be more than passive viewing. By combining a TV-friendly interface with AI-powered suggestions, I hope to make digital experiences more educational, engaging, and meaningful.
