Inspiration
As we brainstormed ideas for this hackathon, South Africa was facing high political tension, with unemployment as a major contributing factor.
As South African youth ourselves, we personally identify with the challenge of narrowing the income and equality gap in the country as we navigate the transition from tertiary studies to the professional world.
A survey we created with 131 respondents revealed a recurring theme: uncertainty about the career paths available within their academic fields of interest and the corresponding job opportunities. Many of us know people who studied challenging and interesting subjects, but who have faced years of unemployment due to low demand for their chosen professions upon graduation.
We also recognized that some young individuals lack digital literacy for job applications. Others struggle with learning disabilities and language barriers. These challenges became the impetus for our solution.
What it does
Skill & Interest Matching Engages users to understand their skills and educational interests. Links these interests with in-demand skills in their city, province, and country.
Career Information Hub Provides comprehensive information on various academic fields. Outlines multiple career paths within those fields and the associated job opportunities. Highlights the societal impact and usefulness of each career path.
Mentorship & Peer Connection Offers an online, interactive mentoring system for guidance in chosen career paths. Enables connections with peers who share the same interests for support and collaboration.
Educational Institutions & Funding Information Centralizes information on educational institutions, admissions requirements, and funding opportunities. Helps users identify the best institutions and funding options for their chosen career paths.
Digital Skills Training Provides an interactive platform for learning digital skills. Bridges the digital divide by offering training in native languages for community members with limited access to digital education.
Entrepreneurship & Freelancing Opportunities Offer resources and training for users to learn about business and upskill. Connect users with the freelance market to create opportunities within the ecosystem.
AI-Powered Investor Connections Use AI to link users with business ideas to investors based on their profiles. Leverage pre built models and Azure APIs to enhance functionality and integration.
Challenges we ran into
After defining our problem statement, we needed to consider the economic sustainability of our monetized solution. We also grappled with the decision of whether to develop a website or mobile application, both with their own implications. Finally, we considered the potential integration of artificial intelligence into our application.

What's next for Nexel
We aim to expand Nexel globally to provide access to all countries and contribute to their development and growth. We also plan to develop Nexel as a mobile application to provide access to disadvantaged individuals.
