NexBuild — The AI Construction Co-Pilot

Inspiration

Building a home is one of the biggest financial decisions people make, yet the planning process is often filled with uncertainty.

Homeowners commonly struggle with questions like:

  • How much will my house actually cost?
  • How much cement, steel, sand, and other materials will I need?
  • How long will construction take?
  • Where can I reduce costs without compromising quality?
  • What will my house actually look like before construction begins?
  • How will changing the design affect my budget?

We wanted to build something that could help answer these questions "before construction begins". That idea became "NexBuild — an AI-powered construction co-pilot designed to help homeowners plan, visualize, estimate, and optimize their dream home."

What NexBuild Does

NexBuild combines AI, construction calculations, architectural visualization, and project planning into one platform.

A user can enter details such as:

  • Plot size
  • Location
  • Number of floors
  • Bedrooms and bathrooms
  • Budget
  • Construction quality
  • Design preferences

NexBuild then helps generate a complete construction planning experience including:

  1. AI Home Design Concepts: Generate and explore different architectural concepts for the user's requirements.

  2. Blueprint Visualization:
Explore concept floor plans and understand the proposed spatial layout.

  3. Cost Estimation: Estimate construction expenses and understand where the budget is being allocated.

  4. Material Intelligence: Estimate construction materials and their approximate quantities and costs.

  5. Construction Timeline:
Break the project into stages such as planning, foundation, structure, roofing, interiors, and finishing.

  6. AI Construction Copilot: Ask questions about the project and receive AI-powered insights based on the current project context.

  7. AI Optimization: Identify potential ways to reduce costs, optimize design decisions, and compare alternatives.

  8. Scenario Planning: Understand how changes in floors, area, materials, or design decisions could affect the project.

How we built it

We wanted NexBuild to be more than a simple chatbot or construction cost calculator. The architecture separates "deterministic construction calculations" from AI-generated insights. Construction-related calculations are handled through a dedicated calculation layer, while Gemini is used for reasoning, project analysis, design assistance, blueprint/image analysis, and the AI Copilot. The application also follows a server-side API architecture so that the Gemini API key is not exposed to the client. For future expansion, we designed a retrieval layer that can connect verified construction standards and regional pricing data such as CPWD and BIS resources.

The 3D Experience

One of the biggest ideas behind NexBuild is that the house shouldn't just exist as numbers and tables.

The user's project evolves visually: "Dream Home → Design → Blueprint → 3D Concept → Cost → Materials → Timeline → Optimization → Ready to Build"

This makes construction planning more understandable and engaging, especially for users who may not have an architectural or engineering background.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was connecting AI-generated design ideas with structured construction information. A visually attractive house is not enough — the design needs to remain connected to the user's requirements.

We also faced challenges with:

  • Generating meaningful variations between architectural concepts
  • Keeping 3D designs consistent with user requirements
  • Connecting 3D concepts with blueprint representations
  • Making blueprints responsive without clipping
  • Building an AI Copilot that understands the current project instead of responding with fixed answers
  • Creating a smooth 3D construction experience
  • Balancing visual quality with browser performance
  • Designing a system that can eventually incorporate reliable construction standards and regional pricing

These challenges helped us realize that an AI construction platform needs a combination of "AI + deterministic calculations + structured project data + visualization", rather than relying on AI alone.

Accomplishments We're Proud Of

Building NexBuild from an initial idea into a working AI-powered construction planning prototype was itself a major achievement for us.

We're especially proud of:

  • "Building a real AI Construction Copilot" that can understand project context and answer construction-related questions.
  • "Creating an interactive 3D home design experience" where users can explore architectural concepts before construction.
  • "Connecting design concepts with blueprint visualization", making the transition from idea to floor plan more tangible.
  • "Combining AI with deterministic construction calculations" instead of relying on an LLM to randomly generate cost and quantity figures.
  • "Creating material and cost intelligence" to help users understand where their construction budget is going.
  • "Building a construction timeline and budget planning experience" that turns a complex construction project into understandable stages.
  • "Adding project history and scenario-based planning", allowing users to explore different possibilities before making expensive decisions.
  • "Implementing a secure server-side Gemini API architecture", keeping the API key away from the client-side application.
  • "Creating an immersive 3D-first experience" rather than building NexBuild as just another dashboard or chatbot.
  • "Designing NexBuild as an extensible platform", with architecture prepared for future CPWD/BIS knowledge integration and regional construction data.

Most importantly, we're proud that NexBuild attempts to solve a real-world problem with a combination of AI, 3D visualization, construction intelligence, and practical planning tools rather than using AI simply as a chatbot.

What we learned

Building NexBuild taught us that creating an AI product is not simply about connecting an API to a chatbot.

We learned how important it is to:

  • Separate AI reasoning from deterministic calculations
  • Design structured data models for AI-generated outputs
  • Build graceful fallbacks when AI services are unavailable
  • Keep sensitive API keys server-side
  • Make AI responses aware of application context
  • Think about data reliability and source attribution
  • Connect 3D visualization with real application state
  • Design complex interfaces without overwhelming users

Most importantly, we learned that the best AI experiences are the ones where AI works "behind the scenes to simplify a complicated task".

What's next for NexBuild

NexBuild is still evolving.

Our future roadmap includes:

  • Verified Maharashtra construction pricing
  • CPWD/BIS knowledge integration
  • More accurate BOQ generation
  • CAD/BIM integration
  • Improved architectural generation
  • Contractor marketplace
  • Live material pricing
  • Construction progress tracking
  • AR-based house visualization
  • Carbon footprint estimation
  • Voice-based construction assistant

Our long-term vision is to make NexBuild a complete "AI construction planning ecosystem" — helping users move from an idea to a better-informed construction plan.
