Inspiration
The idea for Nexbi AI started from a personal experience.
While managing my own money, I realized that tracking finances was not the hardest part. The harder part was actually understanding what my financial activity meant and knowing what I should do next.
I could see what I was spending, but simply having the numbers did not always help me make better financial decisions.
The Problem
That made me realize that many people probably face the same challenge.
We earn money, spend money, try to save, and make financial decisions every day — yet most tools simply record what happened rather than helping us understand it or take the next step.
The Idea
I started thinking: What if there was an AI companion that could actually understand my financial situation and help me navigate it?
Instead of building another expense tracker, I wanted to create something that goes beyond recording transactions — something that could understand, guide, and help people take action.
The Solution
That idea became Nexbi AI, an AI financial companion designed to make personal finance more understandable, actionable, and accessible.
The Vision
The vision is simple:
People shouldn’t have to become financial experts to make better financial decisions.
They should have an intelligent companion that can meet them where they are and help them move forward.
What it does
Nexbi AI helps users:
- Track income and expenses
- Understand their spending habits
- Set and manage savings goals
- Create personalized financial roadmaps
- Get AI-powered financial guidance
- Build better financial habits
- Make smarter financial decisions
AI-Powered Voice Input
We are also introducing AI-powered voice input, allowing users to simply describe a financial activity naturally.
Nexbi can understand whether the action represents an expense, income, budget, or savings activity and process it accordingly.
How we built it
Overview
Nexbi AI is built as a Flutter mobile application with a Django REST backend.
The system is designed around modular services and APIs, allowing new financial and AI capabilities to be introduced without rebuilding the core platform.
Mobile (Frontend)
- Flutter
- Riverpod (state management)
- GoRouter (navigation)
- Material 3 (UI design system)
- Localization (multi-language support)
- Light/Dark mode (theme flexibility)
Backend
- Django
- Django REST Framework
- PostgreSQL (database)
- Redis (caching and task queue support)
- Celery (asynchronous task processing)
- Firebase Cloud Messaging (notifications)
- AI provider abstraction layer (enables integration with different AI models)
Design Principles
- Modular services: Each capability (finance, AI, notifications) is built as a service.
- API-first approach: Clear boundaries between frontend and backend.
- Extensibility: New financial tools or AI models can be added without disrupting the core system.
- Scalability: Redis + Celery ensure smooth handling of background tasks and real-time updates.
Challenges we ran into
Reliability of AI
One of our biggest challenges was making AI reliable enough for financial use cases.
AI responses cannot simply be treated as normal chatbot messages. Financial information needs to be:
- Structured
- Validated
- Safely converted into actual financial records
Interactive AI Features
We also had to design interactive AI features such as:
- Financial roadmaps
- Usage limits
- Notifications
- Personalized insights
All while keeping the experience simple enough for everyday users.
Small Team Constraints
Building Nexbi solo meant balancing:
- Product design
- Mobile development
- Backend architecture
- AI integration
- Testing
- Deployment
- Launch preparation
All happening at the same time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a working end-to-end personal finance platform from the ground up.
What We’re Proud Of
- Building an AI financial assistant
- Creating interactive financial roadmaps
- Implementing expense, income, savings, and budgeting functionality
- Building AI-powered financial insights
- Creating a scalable AI provider architecture
- Developing a notification and engagement system
- Supporting English and French
- Supporting light and dark mode
- Preparing the Android application for production release
The Most Important Achievement
We took the initial idea of an AI financial companion and turned it into a working product.
What we learned
Beyond Connecting to a Model
We learned that building an AI product is much more than simply connecting an application to an AI model.
The real challenge lies in designing the system around the model, including:
- Structured data
- Validation
- User experience
- AI usage management
- Security
- Reliability
- Cost control
Value of AI
We also discovered that AI becomes significantly more valuable when it reduces the effort required from the user rather than simply adding a chatbot to an existing product.
Shaping Nexbi’s Direction
That lesson shaped Nexbi’s direction:
We want AI to be part of the user’s financial workflow — not just something they open when they want to ask a question.
What's next for Nexbi AI
