Inspiration
BallRunner is inspired by classic endless runner games like Temple Run, where quick reflexes and split-second decisions decide how far you survive. We wanted to take that familiar concept and give it a fresh twist by replacing the runner with a constantly spinning ball and adding intentionally confusing swipe mechanics to keep players alert and engaged.
What it does
BallRunner is an endless spinning-ball game where players swipe left, right, up, and down to avoid obstacles and monsters. Red objects represent monsters, yellow objects are obstacles, and the player’s score is measured in meters traveled. The longer you survive, the higher your score. A live leaderboard displays top players on the screen, motivating competitive gameplay.
How we built it
We built BallRunner with a simple but fast-paced core mechanic focused on swipe controls and continuous forward motion. The ball spins constantly, obstacles and monsters spawn dynamically, distance is tracked in meters, and leaderboard data is displayed in real time to highlight top scores.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was designing swipe controls that felt responsive while also being intentionally confusing. For example, the downward swipe does not work, which adds a psychological challenge and increases difficulty. Balancing obstacle placement, monster behavior, and game speed without overwhelming the player was another key challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of creating a unique twist on an endless runner by turning a simple spinning ball into a high-pressure survival challenge. Implementing a meter-based scoring system, a visible leaderboard, and a gameplay loop that is easy to start but hard to master were major wins for us.
What we learned
Through building BallRunner, we learned how small design decisions—like confusing controls—can dramatically change player behavior and difficulty. We also learned the importance of clear visual language, using color (red for danger, yellow for obstacles) to help players react quickly.
What's next for BallRunner
Next, we plan to refine gameplay balance, improve player feedback, expand leaderboard features, and explore new obstacle and monster variations to keep runs unpredictable and engaging while maintaining the fast, competitive core of the game.
