Bridging the Gap: The Story of NewSkool

What Inspired Us

The inspiration for NewSkool came from a common struggle students and parents face—staying informed about what’s happening at school. We noticed that many students felt lost when trying to keep up with events, announcements, and schedule changes. This was especially true for students transitioning into a new school or those who simply missed out on key information. Parents also struggled to stay in the loop, often unaware of teacher conferences or important meetings.

One of the biggest examples we encountered was the closing and repurposing of Granville Center. Many students and parents felt uncertain and disconnected, not knowing what this change meant for them. This highlighted the need for a centralized platform that keeps everyone informed and engaged.

What We Learned

Throughout this journey, we learned that communication is key in any school community. Students want to feel like they belong, and parents want to stay involved. However, existing systems—like emails, bulletin boards, or word-of-mouth—were not always reliable. We discovered that an accessible, user-friendly app could bridge this gap and improve engagement.

We also realized that technology should not just inform but also create a sense of inclusion. When students and parents feel connected, they are more likely to participate, engage, and thrive in the school environment.

How We Built NewSkool

Our project started with brainstorming and identifying the core issues that students and parents face. We then developed a solution—a mobile app that serves as a hub for all school-related updates. The key features include:

  • Event Notifications – Ensuring students and parents never miss important dates.
  • Real-Time Announcements – Keeping everyone updated on changes, closures, and activities.
  • Parent Alerts – Helping parents stay informed about conferences, meetings, and school-wide decisions.

Using user-friendly design principles, we aimed to create an app that is simple, accessible, and effective. We also gathered feedback from students and parents to refine the features and ensure it truly addressed their needs.

Challenges We Faced

Building NewSkool wasn’t without its challenges. Some of the biggest obstacles we encountered included:

  • Identifying the Right Features – Balancing simplicity with functionality was crucial. We didn’t want to overwhelm users with too many features but also needed to ensure the app was comprehensive.
  • Encouraging Adoption – Getting students and parents to use the app required effective outreach and demonstration of its benefits.
  • Technical Development – Creating a smooth, bug-free experience required multiple testing phases and adjustments based on feedback.

Despite these challenges, we remained committed to our mission. Every hurdle taught us valuable lessons about problem-solving, teamwork, and innovation.

The Impact of NewSkool

Now, with NewSkool, students no longer feel disconnected, and parents have a direct link to what’s happening at school. The app has become more than just a tool—it’s a bridge that fosters engagement and inclusivity.

Our journey proves that when you identify a real problem and take action to solve it, you can make a lasting impact. We hope NewSkool continues to empower students and parents for years to come.
