This film is a fictional account of a town I know well, Newport. It takes the viewer back in time to 1983, a historic year for the town when it hosted the America's Cup Regatta. It holds a mirror to geopolitical issues of the day (Japan's rise, a Cold War with the Soviet Union), social concerns of the summer (the tennis championships), and changing social fabric as new families move in.

In describing a real town with all of its fixtures from restaurants to beach clubs, I felt challenged in creating realistic prompts and visual scenery. As a bit of a period piece, I had to apply a 1980s feel to every shot.

The music score was important to get right. I had originally used Barry Manilow's Time in New England for another version. I created "Summer in Newport" on Suno with a romantic, wistful feel to it, alluding to the romantic tensions in the film.

Influenced by Whit Stillman's Metropolitan for its focus on conversation and class.
