Inspiration
We wanted to build a robot with an general artificial intelligence. Freestanding code was necessary; after a while of side-tracked development, we got into operating system development.
What it does
It is a toolkit that allows users to use a pseudo-standard library of C code while providing drivers for human interface devices, graphics cards, internet protocols, and other device.
How we built it
We wrote it using gedit and compiled it using a custom-made cross-compiler and the NASM compiler.
Challenges we ran into
The number of drivers necessary to construct the whole toolkit was far greater than I originally thought, meaning we could not complete enough of the toolkit to show off the functionality we wanted to.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We implemented a lot of the standard library, some simple debugging, vga text-interfacing code, and started to implement hardware drivers for USB support (not included in the final project submitted as they did not see full completion).
What we learned
Building a toolkit of this size takes more time and preparation than we thought.
What's next for NEWOS?
Hopefully, we can complete the standard library implementation and most port-interfacing and hardware support drivers to encompass a lot more application in our toolkit.
